Online Discussion Is Due For Change.

"The sheer volume of information is in danger of creating more noise than value, and as a result limiting its effective use. Innovations in how information is organized, mined, and processed hold the key to filtering out the noise and using the growing wealth of global information to address emerging challenges."

What's Wrong with Discussion Today?

Content Overload. We're drowning in information.

When a lot of people join a conversation, they create an enormous amount of content that's  too much for a single person to digest. Worse still, a lot of it ends up becoming repetitive.

Sometimes, we may write something that's untrue and not realize. Other times, we read something misleading and misinterpret it. Often, important information gets lost or forgotten as the debate ensues. Always, we miss out on the full story because of bad communication.

Unheard Voices. If a good idea was said but no one heard, is it still a good idea?

It's frustrating to go unappreciated. As everyone competes to be acknowledged, some resort to extremes to get noticed. It's exhausting and often derails the goals of discussion.

Social repercussions for expressing unpopular beliefs is the new censorship. Discussion is met with intolerance and vitriol. If we can't question in public each other without fear, how do we expect to keep experts or leaders accountable?
